    Events in space history for 05/19:
    • Near total darkness at noon over New England (1780). It was never scientifically explained. An eclipse? Photo at left was taken by Voyager 1 in 1977 after it was launched on its trip to Jupiter. Note the Earth and Moon.
    • Jacqueline Cochran became the first woman to break the sound barrier (1953).
