    Events in space history for 10/02:
    • For the first time, a plane flew without a pilot (1918). The technology birthed by this early twientieth century endeavor led to automated control systems which permitted the taking of the picture at left by a "freeflyer" satellite deployed from the Shuttle's cargo bay. Much of the Shuttle "rocket/plane" is automated.
