At
about 10:30 PM (CST) on Saturday, January 4th, 2004, Spirit
landed at Gusev Crater.
Gusev crater is an old feature that was formed by an impact from either an asteroid
or comet. Water may have flowed into the the crater, forming a lake, from the
channel at the south end of the crater. Spirit will explore the center which
is the deepest portion of the crater. If liquid water was present at Gusev in
the distant past, it would have survived the longest period of time in this deep
region. |
